The common mugwort, known in English as "Sweet flag", is a perennial herb native to Asia. It earned its name because of its striking scent, which evokes the intensity of vanilla and cinnamon. Acorus calamus grows up to one metre in height and is found mainly in moist, sunny places such as the banks of ponds, lakes and rivers. The leaves are green, glossy, wide and up to 1 metre long, with a full leaf blade, which is rolled at the edge. The flowers are arranged in a cake and are yellow to green in colour.
The common buckthorn is used in many industries, especially in medicine, cosmetics and perfumery. The species Acorus calamus is known for its strong medicinal properties. Its root contains essential oils that have antiseptic and antibacterial properties. Therefore, this plant extract is used in the treatment of colds, liver and stomach disorders. The cosmetic industry, in turn, uses its extracts to make hair products for their refreshing properties. In perfumery, it is used to make perfumes and eau de toilette for its intense, sweet scent. They are also an integral part in various aromatherapy products where they help to calm and relax.
