4-amino-m-cresol
Harm score: 4 (Slightly harmful chemistry)
4-amino-m-cresol is a chemical compound that is referred to in chemistry as 2-Amino-6Chloro-4-Nitrophenol. Although this name is confusing to the layman, this substance is widely used in the cosmetic industry. It is a brown crystalline powder which is characterised by a specific odour and tastes bitter. It is soluble in hot water, alcohol and acetone; in cold water, on the other hand, its solubility is limited. In Czech laboratories, it is handled according to safety data sheets as a harmful product.
The main field of application of 4-amino-m-cresol is the cosmetic industry, specifically the production of hair dyes. The compound is used for its colouring pigment abilities, which when combined with other chemicals contribute to the creation of a wide range of colour shades. Hair dyes containing 4-amino-m-cresol are able to intensely and permanently color hair, and are therefore very popular among consumers who prefer dramatic changes in hair shades or need to cover gray hair. Products containing this must be warned as it can cause allergic reactions in some individuals. It is therefore important to perform a patch test, i.e. a skin sensitivity test, before using cosmetic products containing 4-amino-m-cresol.
