Other names: Bronnopol
Harm score: 3 (Harmless chemicals)
2-Bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3-diol, also known by the trade name Bronopol, is an organic substance belonging to the group of nitro compounds. It is a synthetically produced white crystalline powder with a characteristic odour. Bronopol is particularly known for its strong antimicrobial properties, which make it widely used in many industries. Its molecular formula is C3H6BrNO4 and its molecular weight is 199.99 g/mol.
Bronopol is often found in a wide range of cosmetic and personal care products for skin and hair, such as moisturizing creams, shampoos, conditioners, soaps, shaving products and toothpastes. Due to its preservative properties, it is also often used in the paint and adhesives industry to prevent the growth of bacteria and mould in these products. In addition, Bronopol can also be found in some disinfectants or products with anti-mould protective properties. Although it is widely used in many products, care must be taken to ensure safe dosage, as Bronopol can be irritating to the skin and eyes at high concentrations.
